The Europabrücke in Zurich is a 1.1 kilometer long viaduct that was built in 1961 and 1962. It has two separate directional lanes along its entire length, each with two lanes, a paved central strip outside the mouth of the ramps and sidewalks on both sides.

course

The bridge connects the Höngg district with the Altstetten district . It crosses the Limmat , the A1H motorway , the Zurich-Baden railway line and the Hohlstrasse. The northern end of the bridge is at the Winzerstrasse / Am Wasser intersection; the southern end is at the intersection with Baslerstrasse, where Luggwegstrasse is the continuation of the bridge.

The Europabrücke also serves as a motorway feeder for traffic in the direction of Bern and Basel , which is directed via Bernerstrasse towards the Altstetten motorway junction.

Ramps

Europe Bridge in Zurich

The Europabrücke has six ramps in four places. The northernmost, one-sided ramp to the west forms the northern end of Meierwiesenstrasse and serves to develop the Grünau settlements. The entrance to the ramp is secured by a traffic light system; The Tüffenwies bus stops are located on the bridge after the traffic lights in the direction of travel . From the bus stops a pedestrian ramp leads south on both sides to the Tüffenwies tram stop under the bridge, and a third pedestrian ramp on the east side also leads north to the Limmatuferweg.

The two pairs of ramps, which are indirectly raised on both sides of Bernerstrasse north and south, only allow entry and exit of the bridge in one direction. Access from Bernerstrasse Nord (coming from the city center) towards Höngg is via the Höngger ramp - the only specifically named ramp on the Europabrücke. The west ramp leads from the intersection of Bändlistrasse / Meierwiesenstrasse to the bridge. From Bernerstrasse Süd (coming from Schlieren), access is via a loop that first leads under the bridge into Aargauerstrasse and then via Max-Högger-Strasse onto the ramp, which is located directly next to Bernerstrasse Süd. The opposite eastern ramp leads over Würzgrabenstrasse into Aargauerstrasse. Only the confluence of the west ramp from Bernerstrasse Süd is controlled by a set of traffic lights, the other ramps have a stop signal at the confluence with the bridge.

At the end of the 1990s, another one-sided ramp was subsequently built, which enables the VBZ buses to go directly to Altstetten station. This ramp leads directly to the east of the station building in Saumackerstrasse. It is only approved for public transport and bicycles. Traffic at the newly created junction on the bridge is also regulated by a set of traffic lights. A stairway to the bridge was also built along with the ramp.
