The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was a military award of the US armed forces , which was introduced on November 6, 1942 on the basis of an Executive Order (9265) from Franklin D. Roosevelt . The introduction of this order was intended to honor the soldiers who had served in the European theater of the Second World War, including North Africa and the Middle East . An edition of the order took place between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946. Service star and an arrowhead were awarded as an attachment to the medal. The first recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was Dwight D. Eisenhower .
The embossing of the medal shows a scene from the landing in Normandy . The narrower stripes on the ribbon represent Germany (right), Italy (left) and the USA (central). The broader brown and green stripes are supposed to symbolize the different regions in which the fighting took place. They stand for beach, meadow, forest and mountains.
The equivalent for the Pacific War was the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal .
