European Capital of Smart Tourism

European Capital of Smart Tourism is an award for European cities that the European Union will award for the first time in 2018 for the year 2019. To this end, two cities will be selected as "tourism capitals" for a period of one year (an official German title is not known). In addition, four thematic prizes for the categories Sustainability (to sustainability ), accessibility ( accessibility ), digitization ( digitalisation ) and cultural heritage and creativity ( cultural heritage and creativity ) awarded.

The initiative is organized by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises . Evaluation criteria are

  • Innovation ("How innovative and smart are the implemented measures?"),
  • Sustainability ("How sustainable are the implemented measures over time?"),
  • Inclusivity ("How inclusive are the implemented measures for different social groups?") And
  • Effectiveness ("The degree to which the measures contributed to raising the city's profile as a tourism destination. How effective are these measures? What are the measurable impacts of the measures implemented?") Of tourism measures.

Cities with 100,000 inhabitants or more can apply. The deadline for applications for 2019 was June 30, 2018, and 38 cities from 19 EU member states submitted an application. The winners are the cities of Helsinki and Lyon .
