European Union of the Deaf

The European Union of the Deaf (EUD) is a - and according to its own statement the only - non-profit organization that represents the interests of deaf people on a European level. Members of the association are the national deaf organizations of the member states of the European Union .

The EUD itself is a member of the World Federation of the Deaf and the European Disability Forum . The President of the EUD is Markku Jokinen from Finland. The EUD is based in Brussels , Belgium .

history

In 1985 the British Deaf Association invited the representatives of the national deaf organizations of the European Economic Community to a meeting. On March 6 and 7, 1985, representatives of nine national deaf organizations met in London. They decided on March 6, 1985 to found the European Community Regional Secretariat , which was renamed the European Union of the Deaf on October 10, 1994 .

In July 2017, the EUD had 31 full members and three affiliated members.
