Eurythenes plasticus is a representative of amphipods which 2014 Mariana Trench was caught at depths from 6,010 to 6,949 meters and was in 2020 described as a new species. The species got its name as a symbol to do something against marine pollution and especially the littering of plastic .

A fiber with a size of 649.648 μm was found in one of the crustaceans examined, of which 83.74% consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The discovery of plastic was not unexpected. The species is about 5 cm tall. The surface of the crab is smooth and bristle-free and the rest of the body structure corresponds to that of a typical flea crab. The difference between the female and male specimens seems small, but only one of the crabs caught was male. What is unusual is that the cancer occurs in both abyssal and hadal areas of the sea.
