Eva Schernhammer

Eva S. Schernhammer is an Austrian doctor , epidemiologist and researcher at the Medical University of Vienna . During the COVID-19 pandemic , Schernhammer provided information about the dangers of the virus in numerous interviews and television reports .

education

Eva Schernhammer studied medicine and psychology at the University of Vienna and then worked in clinical practice for seven years. She completed her specialist training in internal medicine and oncology at Harvard University . She completed her Masters in Public Health in Quantitative Methods in 2000 and received her PhD in Public Health from the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard HT Chan School of Public Health in 2003 . In 2005 she qualified as a professor in public health and social medicine at the University of Vienna.

Live and act

Schernhammer founded the scientific association “Austrian Science in North America” (ASciNA) in 2001 and served as its president for several years. She has been Associate Professor in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School since 2009 and at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna since 2017 . Since 2013 she has been a member of the advisory board responsible for awarding the Houska Prize - the largest privately funded Austrian science prize. Since 2015 she has been Professor of Epidemiology at the Medical University of Vienna and heads the Department of Epidemiology at the Center for Public Health.

She is a longtime assessor for the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the USA, the European Commission (EC) and other well-known international funding agencies. She spent many years researching on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Brigham and Women's Hospital . She then completed her specialist training in internal medicine and oncology at Harvard University.

She has published more than 200 scientific papers that have received multiple awards and lectures at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School on topics including Applied Biomarkers in Cancer Epidemiology .

In 2018 she was elected President of the Austrian Society for Epidemiology.

Covid-19 pandemic

Schernhammer became known to the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic . In numerous interviews and television reports, she explained the dangers of the virus and explained the doubling time and the number of unreported cases to a wide audience. She also warned of a second wave of infections. In an interview with Bloomberg , she advocated quick and strict action to contain the COVID-19 virus early.

Awards

In 2002 she received the Ernst and Lily Schönmann Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Cancer Research.
