Gospels from Kleve

The Gospels from Kleve or Gospels from Emperor Lothar is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that was written for Emperor Lothar I before 852 . The manuscript, together with a manuscript in Padua (Kapitelbibliothek, D 47) and one in London (British Library, Add. 37768), is assigned to the court school of Kaiser Lothar, which is located in Aachen . The three codices show stylistic similarities, take up the painting style of the so-called " Palace School of Charlemagne " and are influenced by the Reims school.

The gospel book comprises 241 sheets of parchment , its format is 325 x 245 mm. The text is written entirely in Carolingian minuscule with gold ink.

Lothar gave the manuscript to the Prüm monastery . In 1802 it came to the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris and was returned to Berlin in 1819, where it is now in the State Library (Ms. theol. Lat. Folio 260). During the return negotiations in 1819, she was wrongly identified with a missing gospel book from Cleves. The name "Evangeliar aus Kleve" goes back to a piece of paper glued into sheet 1r by Jacob Grimm's hand . The alternative designation as "Gospels of Emperor Lothar" can lead to confusion with the Lothar Gospels .
