The Evangelical Church in Scharnstein

The Scharnstein Evangelical Church in the market town of Scharnstein in Upper Austria dates from 1965–1966. According to canon law, the church is a preaching station, which roughly corresponds to a branch church . Scharnstein is incorporated into the parish of the Evangelical Parish Church in Gmunden . The parish is part of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria and belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur Upper Austria . The church of Scharnstein is also called the Holy Spirit Church .

The Protestant Church

The foundation stone was laid on July 4, 1965. The inauguration of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche by Superintendent Leopold Temmel took place after around one year of construction on July 24, 1966. The sacred building is kept in simple forms and has a small bell tower with a tower cross.

History of the Protestant Congregation

The area around Scharnstein and Viechtwang remained predominantly Catholic during the Reformation, but the aristocratic family of Jörger von Tollet appointed preachers to the castle chapel of Scharnstein Castle in the years 1585–1622 . From 1625 the castle came to the Kremsmünster Abbey. The tolerance patent of 1781 issued by Emperor Joseph II allowed the reestablishment of Protestant parishes in the Habsburg lands. In today's Austria a total of 48 tolerance communities were created by 1795. At that time there were hardly any Protestants in the Scharnstein area.

The area has belonged to the Protestant parish of Gmunden since 1870. In 1905 Protestant deaconesses founded a rest home in Scharnstein, the villa “Anchor”. Regular evangelical services have been held in the villa since 1920. In 1963 a small church was planned by architect Keller from Süssen and in 1966 the church building was inaugurated. The location of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is opposite the villa mentioned above, directly on the B 120 Scharnsteiner Straße .

As a preaching station, the Protestant church of Scharnstein does not have an independent pastor, but is looked after by the pastor of the parish church of Gmunden.

Demographic peculiarity in the Gmunden district

The Gmunden district has the highest density of Protestant religious buildings in the state of Upper Austria. More than half of the 20 political communities have a Protestant church building. There are seven Protestant churches in the judicial district of Bad Ischl and four churches in the judicial district of Gmunden .
