The Bethesda Evangelical Hospital in Duisburg is a hospital in the Hochfeld district of Duisburg . It was opened in 1904 and is now one of 22 hospitals in Duisburg.

history

The initiator of the foundation was the Hochfeld pastor Wilhelm Heß. The construction work on the main building in the Hanoverian brick style lasted from March 1902 to January 1904. Initially fifty patients were planned, the nurses provided by the Kaiserswerther Diakonie . In 1906, however, there were 95 beds and 13 nursing staff, so that a first extension was necessary. In 1910, 245 beds were made available. In 1909 a nursing school was opened. A south wing was added from 1916 to 1919. Bethesda has also been used as a military hospital since the beginning of the war . A chapel was inaugurated in 1919. The hospital now had 350 beds. In the years 1926–1929, extensive expansion, conversion and modernization measures were carried out, which increased the capacity to 400 beds. The hospital was badly hit by bombing between 1942 and 1945.

After the reconstruction , the hospital already had 420 beds again for its 50th anniversary in 1954. In the 1960s, the provision contract with the Kaiserswerther Diakonie was terminated and the house was converted into a non-profit GmbH. A new ward block was built in 1960, a new chapel in 1962, a modernized operating wing in 1964 and a pharmacy in 1967. Radiation diagnostics developed into the most innovative department .

Bethesda has been an academic teaching hospital at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf since 1974 . Since 1990 it has had the status of a midwifery school .

present

Today the Bethesda Hospital has 432 beds and, with its twelve full-time specialist departments and two admission departments, treats well over 15,000 inpatients and the same number of outpatients per year. In addition to one of the largest obstetrical departments with around 1,300 births per year, other main areas of care include the breast center, the lung center, the colon cancer center and the gynecological cancer center.

The management of the house is currently made up of the commercial director Otto Eggeling as chairman of the management board and the medical director and chief physician of the clinic for general and visceral surgery Dietmar Simon.
