The Evangelical Social Lexicon (ESL) is a standard work on Protestant social ethics , which has been published in several editions by the Stuttgart Kreuz-Verlag since 1954 and by Kohlhammer Verlag from 2001 .

The order for the publication of a lexicon for the field of Protestant social ethics was carried out by the German Protestant Church Congress and went primarily to Friedrich Karrenberg , who carried it out with over 160 employees. The first edition appeared in 1954. The foreword was written by the President of the Kirchentag Reinhold von Thadden-Trieglaff .
