Evangelos Maheras

Evangelos Maheras (* 1918 ; † November 13, 2015 ) was a Greek lawyer , rector of the University of Athens , politician and President of the World Peace Council .

Life

Maheras obtained his higher education entrance qualification after attending elementary school and a secondary educational institution . Then he studied law . With the obtained diploma he became a lawyer . After a few years he became the President of the Bar Association of Athens elected. At the Athens University he held the position of rector.

Maheros got involved in the peace movement at an early stage, in particular for the project of a nuclear weapons-free zone in Europe. In June 1983, he proposed to his successor in the rector's office of Stathopoulos to set up an independent commission to commemorate the US atomic bombing on Hiroshima . This led to a movement of artists, intellectuals and academics who sent out an “ Acropolis Appeal for Peace, Life and Civilization ” so that Athens and other regions around the world declare themselves a nuclear weapon-free zone.

In 1990 Maheras replaced Romesh Chandra as President of the World Peace Council, was in turn replaced by Albertina Sisulu in 1993 and has been Honorary President ever since.

At an international meeting of legal experts in Geneva in 1992 , Maheras was among the 100 signatories of a declaration on UN sanctions against Libya .

In August 2001, Maheras was one of the nineteen prominent personalities in Greece, consisting of all political parties, who protested in an international appeal against the " New World Order ". In it they also demanded the release of Slobodan Milošević .

In 2011, Maheras, as Honorary President of the World Peace Council, criticized the efforts of a group of people working with US foundations that intended to rewrite European history. As Secretary General of the Greek National Council for the settlement of German debts towards Greece , he criticized the attitude of his own government, which to this day refuses to demand the repayment of German debts. In contrast, the German government claims that such liabilities were "neither listed nor paid." He formulated an appeal to the Greek government to collect these German liabilities immediately.
