Exaile is a free graphics program for playing and organizing music that is licensed under the GPL . Exaile is similar in structure to the very popular KDE program Amarok 1.4, but is based on GTK + . The program is currently available for Linux , but installation on Windows is also possible thanks to GStreamer. From version 3.4 there is also an official port to macOS .

The first stable version of the program was released in September 2006, at that time as version 0.2 . The program is written in Python using the pygtk library. GStreamer serves as the audio backend - also under Windows .

In August 2009, Exaile 0.3.0 was released. This version of Exaile has been completely rewritten to make it easier to develop the program in the future.

The functions include Wikipedia and last.fm integration, automatic download of lyrics, tablatures and CD covers, and support for multiple playlists in tabs. In addition, the functionality of Exaile can be expanded with numerous plug-ins , including one that works with an Apple iPod . An audio CD burning function is also planned for the near future .

Four years after the last version, version 4.0 of Exaile was released on June 6, 2019.
