The village of Exo Lakonia ( Greek Έξω Λακώνια ( n. Pl. ) Also Exo Lakkonia) is located eight kilometers west of the east Cretan city of Agios Nikolaos and forms the village of the same name with five hamlets (Τοπική Κοινότητα Έξω Λακκωνίωνos Nikolaos) in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos .

The village lies on a plain surrounded by a chain of hills and in 2011 had 144 inhabitants. The village of the same name also consists of the hamlets of Fioretzides (Φιορέτζηδες, 31 inhabitants), Marnelides (Μαρνέλληδες, 78 inhabitants), Vlachides (Βλάχηδες, 23 inhabitants), Karterides (Καρτέρηδες, 29 inhabitants) and Peponεπν.

Although Exo Lakonia is only eight kilometers from Agios Nikolaos and the sea, you will look in vain for hotels or apartment houses in Exo Lakonia. The population lives largely from agriculture, especially from the cultivation of the olive groves. Almost all residents report of descendants who have moved away from the village. Either to the nearby Agios Nikolaos, or to one of the Cretan university cities of Heraklion or Rethymnon . The Orthodox Church plays an important role in Exo Lakonia. There are churches and chapels in each of the hamlets.
