Empetri Exobasidium is a mushroom art family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the order Ustilaginomycotina . It is an endoparasite of the black crowberry ( Empetrum nigrum) . Symptoms of the infestation by the fungus are the red discoloration and the enlargement of the leaves of the host plants. The range of the species includes the coastal regions of the northern Pacific .

features

Macroscopic features

Exobasidium empetri is initially invisible to the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation are red, greatly enlarged and flattened leaves and, in the late stages, protruding mycelium on their underside .

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Exobasidium empetri grows as with all exobasidium intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The two-pore, 6–8  µm wide basidia are unseptate. They grow directly from the host epidermis or from stomata . The broad-lobed to ellipsoidal spores are hyaline and 14–18 × 6–8 µm in size. At first they are unicellular, when ripe they have no to three septa . Apparently there are no conidia .

distribution

The known distribution area of Exobasidum empetri includes Japan , Sakhalin and Haida Gwaii .

ecology

The host plant of Exobasidium empetri is the black crowberry ( Empetrum nigrum ). The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its basidia later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The spores germinate into conidia or germ tubes from which new mycelium then develops.
