Sundstroemii Exobasidium is a mushroom art family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the order Ustilaginomycotina . It is an endoparasite of the rosemary heather ( Andromeda polifolia ). Symptoms of the infestation by the fungus are strongly widened, red discolored leaves of the host plants. The range of the species includes northern Europe.

features

Macroscopic features

Exobasidium sundstroemii is initially invisible to the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation are light purple-red discolored leaves, which are also clearly widened, as well as in the late stage mycelium protruding on the underside of the leaf .

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Exobasidium sundstroemii grows as with all exobasidium intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The mostly four-pore, less often five-pore basidia are unseptate. They grow directly from the host epidermis or from stomata . The banana-like shaped spores are hyaline and 9–13 × 1.5–3.5 µm in size. The conidia are bacillus-shaped and 7–11 × 0.8–1.2 µm in size.

distribution

The known distribution area of Exobasidum sundstroemii comprises the temperate to subboreal regions of Europe from Germany to Fennoscandia .

ecology

The host plant of Exobasidium sundstroemii is rosemary heather ( Andromeda polifolia ). The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its basidia later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The spores germinate into germ tubes , from which conidia and new mycelium then develop.
