The Explora Escarpment is a step of terrain on the bottom of the Weddell Sea . It is located off the Princess Martha coast of the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land .

The formation was named at the suggestion of the surveyor and glaciologist Heinrich Hinze from the Alfred Wegener Institute . The namesake of the name, recognized by the Advisory Committee for Undersea Features in June 1997, is the research vessel Explora , which was used to carry out geophysical surveys in this area between 1977 and 1980.
