Donald Kerr

Donald M. Kerr Jr. (born April 8, 1939 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American physicist and research and technology manager. From 1979 to 1985 he was the fourth director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Donald Kerr studied electrical engineering at Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1963, a master's degree in 1964 and a doctorate (electrical engineering, physics) in 1966. From 1966 he was at LANL, from 1971 as a group leader. There he conducted research and conducted research on the effects of nuclear weapons at high altitudes and the physics of the ionosphere, detection of nuclear weapon tests (geophysics) and their analysis, inertial fusion (particle beams, lasers, heavy ions), weapon analysis and alternative energies (1975/76 he headed the appropriate department).

From 1985 to 1992, Kerr was Senior Vice President and then President of EG&G Inc. in Wellesley . He was Deputy Manager for Nevada for the Department of Energy (DOE) in Las Vegas and later for the DOE in Washington, DC Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary for Defense Programs and later for Energy Technology.

From 1997 to 2001 he was Assistant Director of the FBI responsible for the FBI laboratories. From 2001 to 2005 he was Deputy Director of Science and Technology at the CIA and from 2005 to 2007 Director of the National Reconnaissance Office . From 2007 to 2009 he was Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence .

He received the Charlie Allen Award for Distinguished Intelligence Service from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association , the CIA Distinguished Intelligence Medal , the NRO Distinguished Service Medal, and the DOE Outstanding Service Award (1979). In 2008 he was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Kerr has been on the board of directors of Miter Corporation since 2009 and has been vice chairman of the board since 2014. Prior to that, he held various other management positions at technology companies.
