Exploring the Ancient Greek Language and Culture is an annual international Ancient Greek competition for senior high school students held in Europe and Mexico and organized by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

The competition is organized by the “Directorate for International Relations in Education” of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. Co-organizers are the “Hellenic Language Heritage” organization, the “Association of Greek Philologists”, the “European Cultural Center Delphi ”, the “Organization for the Internationalization of the Greek Language ” and the “All-Greek Association of Teachers of Greek Language and Civilization”.

The participants in the competition are high school students in the final grades in all European countries as well as in Mexico; a separate rating applies to Greek and Cypriot participants. In 2007/2008, a total of 3532 pupils from 551 schools took part in the competition, almost 2700 of them from Greece and Cyprus. First of all, a national winner will be determined from among all participants in a country, who will then be evaluated in an international comparison. The best participant from each participating country will be invited to the awards ceremony in Athens and a week-long tour of Greece organized by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

The aim of the annual competition is to promote classical philology among the students at high schools across Europe and Mexico, where ancient Greek is also taught. In addition, the importance of classical philology is to be affirmed, the European dimension of antiquity is to be emphasized, the relationship between the ideas and values ​​of classical antiquity and the fundamental values ​​of European history and civilization to be emphasized and to make ancient Greek understandable as a means of expressing humanistic ideas and values become. Last but not least, the aim is to strengthen classical philology through the exchange of experiences between students and teachers in European schools.
