Explosion in the Madrid Metro

In the explosion in the Madrid Metro on January 10, 1938 , a large amount of ammunition that was stored in a subway tunnel of the Madrid Metro exploded . At least 96 people died.

During the Spanish Civil War , the capital Madrid was held by the Republicans and besieged by the Fascists . The Madrid metro continued during this time, but the then short branch line of Line 2 between Goya and Diego de León , now part of Line 4 , was shut down, used as an arsenal and ammunition was stored here. It exploded for an unknown cause.

Around 100 people are said to have died, the number of injuries was probably far higher. Several trains on the subway were damaged by the shock wave. Due to the strict censorship , the details of the accident were concealed. The subway continued to operate in the unaffected parts of the system.
