Extirpation

In medicine, extirpation ( extirpare , Latin: "to tear out, to remove") describes the complete surgical removal of organs ( e.g. extirpation of the spleen ), of circumscribed tissue parts that show tumor growth (such as lipomas , retention cysts such as atheromas , Tissue nodes in organs such as the thyroid gland ) or from individual lymph nodes.

The term ectomy can only be used synonymously for the complete extirpation of a structure :

In dentistry , vital extirpation refers to the complete removal of the living pulp from the pulp cavity as part of the root canal treatment .

Other meanings

Extirpation has historically been used as a synonym for extermination or eradication . For example, warned Friedrich Nietzsche after the German Empire before the "extirpation of the German spirit in favor of, the German Empire '' .
