Leopold von Orlich

Leopold Ludwig von Orlich (born June 30, 1804 in Stallupönen , † June 2, 1860 in London ) was a Prussian officer and author.

origin

His parents were the Prussian major Ludwig Julius von Orlich (1755-1810) and his wife Freiin Frederike Charlotte von Klingspor (* 1771). His sister Amalie Philippine (1797-1835) was married to Major General Johann Heinrich von Schachtmeyer .

Life

Leopold von Orlich was an officer in the Prussian Kaiser Alexander Regiment . Even as a lieutenant, he wrote historical works that were published. He attended lectures and wrote with Carl Ritter and Alexander von Humboldt . In 1842 he was authorized to join the British Army in India as a captain . On July 1, 1842, he embarked in Southampton and reached Bombay on August 6. Letters from this trip appeared in 1845 as a travel description. He came as part of the General Staff under Sale , who was preparing a new campaign in Afghanistan . He traveled to the front with reinforcements, but the war was over when he got there. In early 1843 he accompanied Maddock the representative of the governor of India to Lahore at the court of the Maharajah of Punjab. He returned home in 1843. He traveled a little through India, embarked on April 5th in Madras and reached Falmouth on June 8th. He published his experiences in India in the book “Travel in India”, one of the first books to be illustrated with color plates in Germany. He took his leave as a major in 1848 . From then on he lived mostly in England and died on June 2, 1860 in London .

He married in 1847 Mary Euphemia Mathew (* 1809), daughter of George Mathew (1760-1846) of Fowlers Hall in Kent.
