Exuperantius von Cingoli ( Italian Esuperanzio di Cingoli ) is the traditional name of a bishop of Cingoli in the 5th century and saint of the Catholic Church. His vita , written down by an unknown author towards the end of the 13th century, shows - closely following the Nazarius legend - the model of a Christ-shaped bishop and does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about a historically tangible personality.

Legend

According to the Vita, interspersed with miraculous accounts, Exuperantius was born in the Roman province of Africa at the time of the vandal invasion, the son of an influential pagan family. Contrary to his father's career plans, he decided in favor of Christianity at an early age , was baptized and, amidst storms and dangers, traveled by ship to Rome . There he began intensive missionary work and aggressively fought paganism. He was arrested but was released through the mediation of the Pope . This appointed him Bishop of Cingoli in the Marche . After an initial refusal out of humility and self-doubt, Exuperantius accepted the office and exercised it for fifteen years until his death in such a way that he won the highest esteem and love of the people and converted many to the faith.

Doubts about the Exuperantius legend have been expressed since the 18th century.
