The Eyüp Sultan Mosque ( Turkish Eyüp Sultan Camii ) in Emden is the first Islamic church in East Frisia . The sponsoring association of the mosque Turkish Islamic Community in Emden e. V. currently has 70 members and belongs to the Turkish-Islamic Union (DITIB). It is named after Abu Ayyub al-Ansari .

history

As a result of immigration, the proportion of Muslims in the population of East Frisia has increased. About 1,300 Muslims live in Emden itself, with a total of just under 52,000 inhabitants. Before the mosque was built, they had to go to the nearest mosques in Papenburg or Oldenburg. Backyard mosques and prayer rooms were partly used. Burials according to Muslim rites have been possible for some time. A separate burial ground has been set up for this at the Tholenswehr cemetery.

Plans to build a mosque in Emden had been around for a long time. The Muslims received support in this project from the city of Emden and from the Evangelical Reformed Church Council in Emden.

In 2008, the sponsoring association acquired a former restaurant in the official district in the immediate vicinity of Emden's main train station, which was in the foreclosure auction, and started initial discussions with the city about the construction of the mosque. After completion of the approval process in December 2008, construction work began, which was largely carried out by the community members themselves.

After the construction work was completed, the mosque was handed over to its intended use in October 2009. The state superintendent of the Ostfriesland-Ems district , representatives of the city and a representative of the umbrella organization Turkish-Islamic Union also took part in the inauguration ceremony .

The Turkish Islamic Community in Emden has around 90 members. A quarter of them are Germans with foreign roots.

The one-storey building planned in the original plans was not realized. A minaret from which people call to prayer was not planned. In total, the renovation cost around 130,000 euros, which were raised through donations.

The mosque's premises are over 370 square meters. Of this, around 130 square meters are used for the prayer room, which is designed for around 200 believers. The women pray in a separate part. Other rooms in the building are used as club rooms and serve as a public meeting point.
