Ezequiel Zamora

Ezequiel Zamora (born February 1, 1817 in Cúa , Miranda , † January 10, 1860 in San Carlos , Cojedes ) was a Venezuelan civil war general and a peasant leader of the Guerra Federal from 1859 to 1863.

Ezequiel Zamora was one of the liberal leaders in the Venezuelan civil wars of the 19th century. Together with Simón Bolívar and Simón Rodríguez , he is counted among the three outstanding personalities of the "Bolivarian Movement". He is also known as the "General of the Free People" because on December 10, 1859, he inflicted a devastating defeat on the troops of the large landowners near Santa Inés , after he had previously lured them to an area favorable to the peasant army. A month later he was killed in the attack on the city of San Carlos.

Today Ezequiel Zamora is a symbol of the farmers' struggle for land and of anti-oligarchic politics. The Coordinadora Campesina Ezequiel Zamora , the land movement Ezequiel Zamora and the Municipio Ezequiel Zamora , a district in the state of Cojedes, are named after him.
