Ferry Salbke
The Salbke ferry was a ferry across the Elbe near Salbke . It connected the village of Salbke on the left bank of the Elbe with the Kreuzhorst forest area on the right .
history
A forerunner of the Salbke ferry was the monastery ferry . It belonged to the Salbke monastery and served in particular to reach the areas on the right bank of the Elbe that also belonged to the monastery of Our Lady . It therefore did not have a fixed location, but was used as required. For example, the cattle from the cloister courtyard were transported across the Elbe at Salbke to the meadows at Kuhlenhagen . But the monastery ferry was also used south of Westerhüsen near Wahlwiese and Pötritz , and further north near Prester , where the monastery also owned property. In a certain sense, the monastery ferry competed with the nearby Westerhüsen ferry , although it handled private and other agricultural traffic.
After the destruction of the Thirty Years War , the monastery ferry first started operating again and was also available to the general public. Since it was still not operated in a faithful manner, it was too unreliable for the residents. From 1690 the Westerhüser ferry was also in use again. The provost of the monastery complained against this to the Domvogtei and claimed that the monastery ferry was in jeopardy. The 79-year-old Westerhüser David Koch testified, however, that there used to be two ferries without any existential threat. The provost's complaint was then dismissed. The Westerhüsen later complained that the monastery ferry also translated private people and wagons, as this would be the sole task of the Westerhüsen ferry. In fact, the Domvoigt prohibited the monastery ferry from making such black trips.
In the middle of the 19th century, the monastery ferry stopped operating because the management of the monastery property was given up.
Salbker then set up the Salbke ferry. It was operated as a barge ferry and crossed the Elbe at the level of the local situation Salbke. At first there were considerable economic difficulties. Due to the general increase in traffic, the ferry became economically viable after a while. The ferry operated until the GDR era and then ceased operations.
In the Repkowstraße of Salbke, which has been part of Magdeburg as a district since 1910, there is still an old, weathered sign for the ferry today (as of 2012).
