The Fédération Suisse de Rugby (FSR) or the Swiss Rugby Association is the umbrella organization of the Swiss rugby clubs . The association, founded in 1972, has around 50 clubs and 180 teams. The FSR is divided into four regional associations, three in French -speaking Switzerland and one in German-speaking Switzerland .
history
The sport of rugby was first played in Switzerland as early as 1869 - in Geneva . However, it was not until around 1881 that it was really seriously practiced. Incidentally, the Geneva Soccer Team Established in 1890, owes Servette its roots rugby. Even then, the players had to pay taxes to the club (for membership fees, lost games, balls or absences). With the beginning of the First World War, many of the foreign players had to return to their homeland to the fronts, and some of the Swiss players also had to do their military duties. After the war, rugby could not build on its previous importance and the Swiss population was much more interested in football. All of Servette's rugby activities were ended from that moment.
Between 1935 and 1940, various English and Belgian teams tried to gain a foothold in Switzerland, but failed because of the Second World War. In 1958 rugby began to emerge from oblivion again and so the FSR was founded in 1972. In 1974 the Swiss Federation joined the Fédération Internationale de Rugby Amateur (FIRA). At the beginning of the 1990s, the sport was also included in the youth + sport funding program.
