Jugend + Sport (Y + S) is a Swiss sports promotion program for children and young people. For this purpose, the federal government supports the organizers of sports courses and camps with contributions, provided that they meet the legal requirements of J + S. The federal government is responsible for the program and works with the cantons to implement it. In accordance with the legal requirements, more than 80,000 courses and camps are supported with federal contributions every year (as of 2018).

history

J + S is the successor organization to the military preschool . Construction began in 1971 after the constitutional article on gymnastics and sport was approved by the Swiss people. If the offers of the preliminary lessons were tailored to young men aged 16 and over for physical training and preparation for military service , boys and girls aged 14 and over were allowed to participate at J + S. The minimum age has been reduced in several stages down to 10 years, so that today all schools can use the offers. In connection with the increasing obesity of children, the services were extended to preschool children from the age of 5 in 2009: with the J + S-Kids program (now J + S-Kindersport). Most Swiss schools and clubs can now use the Y + S services. The federal government supports sporting activities through Y + S offers in around 70 types of sport at a cost of over CHF 100 million.

Goals of J + S

Youth and sport pursues the following goals:

Y + S

  1. designs and promotes sport suitable for children and young people, taking into account the principles of fairness and safety
  2. enables young people and children to experience and help shape sport holistically and promotes their integration into a sports community
  3. supports the development and development of young people from an educational, social and health point of view
  4. promotes the long-term, high-quality and performance-oriented training of talented young athletes
  5. prepares sports managers with specific training for their tasks as Y + S cadres (leaders, experts, coaches), trains them according to their needs and supports them in the exercise of their Y + S cadre function

Age-appropriate sport contributes to the development of children and young people and forms the basis for lifelong exercise. For J + S it is of central importance that children and young people develop joy in sport and exercise and that they can gradually take on responsibility at all levels. The ideal development leads from the active child resp. Adolescents to committed Y + S leaders and from experienced Y + S leaders to supporting Y + S coaches or Y + S experts who train prospective managers themselves.

For the purpose of social integration, gender equality, health promotion or promotion of Y + S, the Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO) can take measures to increase the promotion of individual Y + S sports or Y + S as a whole for certain groups of children and young people to meet.

Leadership training

The training and further education of Y + S leaders is a central program objective, which the national sports associations are involved in implementing. The Federal Office for Sport FOSPO defines the training structures for each Y + S sport, designs the didactic basics and formulates principles in the areas of safety, prevention and integration. In this context, the FOSPO develops the necessary teaching and learning materials. In this way, high quality, harmonized training and further education is ensured. Every year over 75,000 leaders and around 3,500 experts attend the training courses and advanced training modules at Y + S.

Managers up to the age of 30 are legally entitled to up to one working week of unpaid leave for “free managerial, supervisory or advisory work in the context of extracurricular youth work” (Swiss Code of Obligations). This youth leave also applies to youth work outside of Y + S.
