The Five Brothers are a group of trees protected as a natural monument in the Dresden town of Oberwartha .

The group of trees at Tännichtgrund consists of five sweet chestnuts ; the planting time is dated to around the first half of the 17th century. The tree heights are between 12 and 25 meters, the treetops are around 10 to 20 meters in diameter. The trunk circumference at a height of 1.30 meters varies from 4.15 meters to 6.20 meters.

The path from Oberwartha to Tännichtgrund, where the Five Brothers are, was named after the group of trees, the Five Brothers Way . The nearby Gertrud source drains into the Fünf-Brüder-Bach , a tributary of the Tännichtgrundbach .

Various legends have come down to us about the origin of the Five Brothers. One tells of a family who lived in Oberwartha many centuries ago. The family had five sons and a daughter. The latter often spent her time at a lake on the edge of the forest. One day a dragon settled on this lake, abducted the daughter and carried her off to his enchanted castle in a nearby quarry. The dragon promised the girl all the treasures of the world if she married him, but she repeatedly rejected the monster. When the daughter did not come home, the brothers went out one by one to find their sister; they were all killed by the dragon. After many years, the daughter managed to leave the dragon's castle for a short time. She discovered a bloody dagger that belonged to one of her brothers and realized that the dragon had killed them all. With a trick, the daughter finally managed to escape, she drove the dragon away and returned to her homeland. She planted the five trees in memory of her brothers.

According to another legend, six monks from Altzella monastery each planted a sweet chestnut before embarking on a crusade . Of the six trees, however, only five grew, and a few years later only five of the monks returned home; the sixth had died on the crusade.

Another legend tells of five local brothers who went into the world and grew rich and prosperous; when they returned home, each of them planted a tree out of gratitude.
