Prince of Sulmona

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prince of Sulmona is - based on the place Sulmona in the Italian province of L'Aquila - a title that was first conferred in 1526 by Emperor Charles V in his capacity as King of Spain to Charles de Lannoy , 1522-1524 Viceroy of Naples . The family died out with the 6th prince of Sulmona in 1604.

A second award was made to Marcantonio Borghese , the nephew of Pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese), whose descendants still hold the title today. The current title holder is Scipione Borghese (* 1970), the 14th Principe di Sulmona.

The most famous prince of Sulmona is Camillo Filippo Ludovico Borghese (1775–1832), who married Pauline Bonaparte , sister of Napoléon Bonaparte and Duchess of Guastalla.
