Oventrop is a company in the metal processing industry that operates as a GmbH & Co. KG . Oventrop was founded in Altena and later moved to Bigge ( Olsberg ). The history of the company is an example of the commercial integration of the early industrialized Märkisches Sauerland and the commercially more peripheral (Cologne) Sauerland in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

history

Arnold Oventrop (1820–1871) founded the Arnold Oventrop & Co. brass and bronze ware factory in Altena in 1851 . Right from the start, the company concentrated on processing copper and brass metals, for example for door or furniture fittings. Since the city of Altena was now highly industrialized and the workforce was becoming scarce, the Oventrop company relocated its production sites to Grüne ( Iserlohn ), Bigge (Olsberg), Brilon and Kirchhundem between 1886 and 1904 . In 1906 most of the operations were closed except for the Bigge and Iserlohn plants. In 1922 both companies became independent of each other. Paul Oventrop ran the company under the name F. W. Oventrop Arn. Son continued in Bigge, while Otto Adolf Oventrop took over the business in Grüne (Iserlohn). At about the same time, the Bigge plant concentrated on the production of fittings. As early as the 1950s, the Fähnrich and Rump families became shareholders of the company, which began to replace the old owner family. With the boom in oil heating in the 1950s and 60s, the company rose to become the leading supplier of oil fittings. With the decline in demand as a result of the first oil price crisis in the early 1970s, the company found itself in a crisis that threatened its existence. In the following decades the focus was mainly on the manufacture of thermostatic valves (for gas heating). The company was so successful with this program that another branch was established in Brilon in 1980; this was extensively expanded by building a new hall in 2010. At the beginning of the new millennium, the company, which has been called FW Oventrop GmbH & Co. KG since 1998, had a turnover of around 185 million DM and employed around 800 people.

Individual fittings from the company's series can also be found in the Museum of Modern Art , New York.
