FW Papke was an important company in the specifically Viennese branch of leather gallantry and art bookbinding during the monarchy . The company was known for the quality of its products. The company was located on Mozartplatz (Mozartgasse 4) in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden .

history

The company was founded in 1841 by Karl Papke, a native of Greifswald , and achieved significant success from the start. It grew from year to year until it was developed into the establishment that it was then in the front row of companies in this branch. His successor as head of the company was his son F. W Papke.

Through purposeful craftsmanship, FW Papke knew how to give his products a worldwide reputation and thus to consolidate the reputation of the Viennese art industry. Its products have been exported all over the world. The upscale art circle Pakpes, which received orders from all over the world, grew from year to year despite all the customs duties .

Papke produced innumerable works for the personal use of the emperor, which received the appreciative praise of the high client. Papke was also the chamber supplier to Archduke Eugen . The splendid albums , the covers for addresses in stylish and artistic execution, were also known domestically and had often served as models for foreign competitors. For this he employed qualified employees who manufactured the high-quality products on an artistic level.

Around 1893, the establishment was set up in his own home in his former residence with all the requirements and achievements of the latest technology, so that the FW Papke company on Mozartplatz, next to the Johann Strauss Theater , represented itself as one of the first companies in this branch.

Papke was awarded a prize at the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873. He received a diploma of recognition for services to the arts and crafts, the silver medal at the exhibition in Paris in 1894 and at the exhibition in Antwerp in 1894.
