F57 (Paralympics)
F57 is a starting class of Paralympic sports for athletes in athletics . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:
- "Impairment of muscle strength or passive mobility. Athletes have a 'good' leg and a 'bad' leg. Good function of the hips, trunk and arms. Good mobility forwards and backwards on one side of the leg. Can get up and walk without aids. "
The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . Track and field athletes in classes T51 – T54 and F51 – F57 are among the athletes with: “Impairment of muscle strength or passive mobility. ( Paraplegia , polio , other muscle weakness, amputation , malformation of limbs and equals) " . Low class numbers indicate a higher level of impairment than high class numbers. All athletes start sitting in a wheelchair or throwing chair. The degree of impairment of the athlete in competitions increases with decreasing / lower class numbers from F57 to F51.
Class F57 includes athletes with a wide range of impairments, all of which are related to one leg :
- Athletes with a lower or upper leg amputated on one side or those with a shortened leg,
- Muscle weakness and reduced muscle function in one leg (e.g. as a result of polio ),
- Leg with no joint function in the knee,
- equal to these impairments.
The following conditions apply to the athletes:
- Unilaterally impaired athletes who would also be eligible to start in F42 and F44 should also start in F57 without using aids (prostheses),
- no use of other aids to remedy the physical impairment,
- it is started sitting.
Earlier classifications of the Paralympic sports also contained a class F58, which compared to F57 contained further weakened impairments, but which appeared too similar to those of the classes F57 and F56. A class T57 does not exist.
