FA vase

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FA Vase is a competition for English football teams from the lower regional leagues that takes place annually.

Before 1974, footballers in the English leagues were either amateurs or professionals . In 1974, when many clubs began to pay amateurs money to play, the Football Association abolished the separation and also the FA Amateur Cup . Instead, it introduced the FA Vase for the majority of clubs that had previously played in the Amateur Cup.

In the first season 1974/75 more than 200 teams took part. In 1999, 446 teams took part in two qualifying rounds that preceded the six main rounds, semi-finals and finals.
