St Helens Town AFC

St Helens Town AFC is an English football club based in St Helens , Lancashire . The club is a member of the North West Counties Football League, Premier Division, and plays its home games at Brocstedes Park, Ashton-in-Makerfield , home of Ashton Athletic .

The predecessor club was formed in the early 1900s and the games were played on Park Road. He joined the Lancashire League in 1901 before moving to the second division of the Lancashire Combination in 1903. After fifth place in the first season, which brought promotion to the first Division One, he was relegated again the next season. After the promotion and a runner-up in the 1908/09 season, they left the combination in 1914.

The club was re-established in 1946 when a group of local business people bought land on Hoghton Road for a soccer field. German prisoner of war Bert Trautmann played for the newly formed club before becoming a professional player at Manchester City . The club joined Division Two of the Lancashire Combination in 1949, where they won the championship in the 1950/51 season and were promoted to the first division. In the next season, however, was relegated. A recovery succeeded with third place in the 1964/65 season, where they won the championship in the 1970/71 season.

In 1975 the club moved to the Cheshire County League, where they remained placed in Division One until the North West Counties League was founded in 1982. In the 1986/87 season the club won the FA Vase for the first time . In the final at Wembley Stadium , the club won against local rivals Warrington Town 3-2.

In 2000, the club left the grounds on Hoghton Street and moved to Knowsley Road, home of St Helens RLFC.
