The FFVS J 22 was a single-engine Swedish fighter from 1942.
development
At the beginning of World War II who wanted to Swedish Air Force ( Flygvapnet ) their obsolete Gloster Gladiator - Double Decker replaced by a more modern fighters. Sweden then ordered 120 P-35 and 144 P-66 Vanguard fighters in the USA . However, on June 18, 1940, the United States entered an arms embargo that also affected Sweden.
The Swedish Air Force was looking for alternatives, but the Finnish VL Myrsky and Soviet Polikarpov I-16 performed too poorly. A delivery of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero was impossible. Ultimately, 70 Fiat CR.42 Falco and 60 Reggiane Re.2000 Falco were procured from Italy and put into service under the designations J11 and J20, respectively, but given their technology, which was already partially outdated, this was only a short-term solution. The Saab company was busy building the Saab 17 and Saab 18 at this time .
So a new company was founded for the planned hunter, the Kungliga Flygförvaltningens Flygverkstad i Stockholm (FFVS) under the direction of Bo Lundberg. The J 22 was designed as a low-wing aircraft with a licensed engine Pratt & Whitney R-1830 "Twin Wasp".
The first flight took place on September 20, 1942 at Bromma Airport . The commissioning followed in October 1943. A total of 198 machines were manufactured by April 1946. The machines had good flight characteristics and performance and, according to the pilots, were on a par with the North American P-51 Mustang later used by Sweden at altitudes below 5000 m . However, it was difficult to see the ground during landing and the non-lockable tail wheel could cause problems on the runway. The J22 remained in service with the Swedish Air Force until 1952.
