The Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) (German Latin American Faculty for Social Sciences ) is a transnational organization for research, teaching and promotion of the social sciences in Latin America. It was founded on April 17, 1957 on the initiative of UNESCO in Rio de Janeiro on the occasion of the Conferencia Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales .

It is involved in research and research funding as well as postgraduate training in the branches in the member countries. As a rule, a number of specializations, diplomados , maestrías and doctoral programs with a political, sociological, economic, cultural-anthropological or interdisciplinary orientation are offered. The branches also offer a rich cultural program.

Member countries are Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Costa Rica , Cuba , Chile , Ecuador , Honduras , Guatemala , Mexico , Nicaragua , Panama , the Dominican Republic and Suriname .

Since its inception, over 12,000 specialists (as of 2018) have been trained in postgraduate courses.

The general secretary for the period from 2016 to 2020 is the humanities, political and historical scholar Josette Altmann Borbón from Costa Rica.
