FR 1 was a French earth satellite. It was France's second artificial satellite and was launched just ten days after the first ( Astérix ) on December 6, 1965. In contrast to Astérix, however, a US launch vehicle was used this time ( Scout ). The satellite had a mass of 72 kg and reached an orbit about 750 km high.

FR 1 was used to research wave propagation at very low frequencies. A system of three magnetic and two electrical antennas on board made it possible to determine the direction of propagation and the wave resistance of a radio wave. The long-wave transmitters FUB ( Seine-Port , France, 16.8 kHz) and NBA ( Panama , 24 kHz) served as transmission systems .
