Woman with facekini

The Facekini is a mask for swimmers and beach goers, which is intended to protect the skin of the face from jellyfish , solar radiation , smog and other environmental influences.

The Facekini was created in the Chinese port city of Qingdao , where it was first seen in 2004 and was widely used by beach-goers and swimmers there by 2012 at the latest. The inventor is Zhang Shifan, who runs a swim accessories store in Qingdao with her husband. After initially only making monochrome facekinis in the first few years, she has also been making colorful facekinis inspired by the Peking Opera since 2015 . Since 2012, both the Chinese and international press have reported on the facekinis of Qingdao several times, and they subsequently became popular in other coastal areas of China.

The popularity of the facekinis in China can be explained, among other things, by the fact that light, untanned skin is considered the ideal of beauty in China .
