history

From the municipal, state-supported crafts school founded in 1904, the crafts and arts and crafts school developed in 1910. In the crafts and arts and crafts school, subjects such as interior design, painting, graphics, sculpture, textile art and blacksmithing were studied.

In 1938 the school was renamed the “Master School of German Crafts, Dortmund”. The crafts and arts and crafts school, built in 1908 by the town planning officer Friedrich Kullrich , was destroyed by bombing during World War II. From 1946 to 1955 the school was housed in Buddenburg Castle in Lünen-Lippholthausen .

Then in 1956 the school moved into the existing school building of the former Hoesch training workshop (Ottostraße 9). With the move in 1956, the Werkkunstschule was founded , which was initially only a training location for artists and craftsmen, but later also became a training location for designers and architects. In 1963 the Werkkunstschule Dortmund became a municipal higher technical school for design.

On August 1, 1971, the Werkkunstschule was integrated into the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and merged into the architecture and design departments. The departments of architecture and design split in 1976 when they moved to the buildings on August-Schmidt-Straße (department of architecture) and Max-Ophüls-Platz 2 (department of design).
