Specialist for purchasing and logistics

A certified specialist for purchasing and logistics in Germany is a publicly recognized qualification at the master's level , which was awarded after successfully completing function- related commercial advancement training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act. The nationwide examination was carried out on the basis of a special statutory ordinance before the examination committee of a Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK).

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), advanced training regulations for the advanced training courses for certified specialist for purchasing and certified specialist for logistics systems were created, which are to replace the specialist for purchasing and logistics in the medium term and each have independent, cross-sector training for experts in purchasing and for experts in logistics. For this purpose, the Board of Trustees of German Business for Vocational Education and Training (KWB) appointed an expert group in 2012, in which representatives of various professional associations and purchasing experts from several industrial companies were represented who carried out this reorganization procedure.

Certified specialists for purchasing and logistics are qualified to perform the following tasks independently and responsibly:

  • Planning, controlling and scheduling in purchasing and logistics processes
  • Purchasing marketing, designing supplier relationships, conducting negotiations and concluding contracts
  • Development and implementation of logistic concepts including strategic analyzes of the logistic chain in the company
  • Lead employees and implement team and project management
  • Realization of controlling and quality management in purchasing and logistics

Legal regulation

The prospective certified specialist in purchasing and logistics had to prove relevant specialist knowledge in a public-law examination in accordance with the training ordinance. A certificate is issued that the exam has been passed.

Admission requirements

Admission to the examination to become a Certified Specialist for Purchasing and Logistics is granted to anyone who has successfully passed a final examination in a recognized commercial apprenticeship and then at least two years of professional experience in purchasing or logistics or a comparable qualification. In terms of content, professional practice must be related to the tasks in purchasing or logistics. With a correspondingly longer professional experience, admission to the examination is possible even without a previous professional qualification.
