Facundo Bacardí i Massó (* 1814 in Sitges , Spain , † May 9, 1886 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba ) was the founder of Bacardi Limited , the largest privately owned spirits manufacturer in the world.

Life

Facundo Bacardí emigrated with his brothers to the Spanish colony of Cuba in 1830 and settled in Santiago de Cuba.

At that time there was only unripened and bitter rum in Cuba , the so-called aguardiente ('burning water'), whose quality and sales opportunities Bacardí wanted to improve by refining the distillation process and subsequent filtration and storage. On 4 February 1862 he bought for this purpose for 3500 US Dollars a small rum distillery in the Calle Matadero no. 5 in the port of Santiago and founded the company Bacardi & Co . The new production process for white premium rum with a soft and mild taste brought the family company various awards and great economic success in the following years, so that Facundo Bacardí in Cuba was also known as " El Rey de los Rones " ('The King of Rums ') got known.
