Faerghail is a Finnish melodic death metal band from Huittinen that was formed in 1995.

history

The band was founded in the summer of 1995 by guitarist Kai Lehtinen, bassist Petri Moisio and drummer Tomi Kangassalo. Session members Jussi Ranta as singer and keyboardist and Tuomas Murtojärvi as second guitarist joined in the fall , after which the demo In Dreamful Supremacy was recorded, which was released in January 1996. Shortly after publication, Ranta and Murtojärvi were added as permanent members. In 1996 the band also played the demo Come to the Shadows of the Flaming Torches , which consists of live recordings. The band continued to rehearse and write new material, after which they went to Akaan MR Studios in August to record four new songs. The demo was sent to Sorrowmoon Records , whereupon the label showed interest in the release of an EP . However, the label was liquidated before it even came about. However, the owner of the label had forwarded the demo to Dark Moon Productions , which resulted in the EP Dark Oceans Calm . This was sent to various labels, whereupon Faerghail signed a recording contract with the Belgian label Shiver Records for the release of two albums. The band then wrote material for their debut album, which was recorded and mixed at Akaan MR Studios from April 10-13, 1997. The release was planned for the end of the year. However, as there were problems with the design of the artwork, the release was delayed to spring 1998. Due to additional problems on the part of the label, Horizon's Fall was only released in 1999. The album consists of eight new songs and four songs by Dark Oceans Calm as a bonus. After that, Kai Lehtinen left the line-up to concentrate on his other bands. The bassist Moisio then took over the electric guitar. Since the band didn't play concerts, he was able to occupy both instruments. During the waiting phase until the album was released, the members had already written and rehearsed on the second album. From January 15 to 20, 2000, the second album was recorded in the Astia Studios under the direction of Anssi Kippo and Jussi Jauhiainen . With the label struggling again, after writing and rehearsing enough material for an EP, the group turned to Northern Sound Records , who were willing to release the EP. Before the band moved to the Astia studios, the drummer Kangassalo left the band because he didn't have enough time to concentrate on the project. Instead, Pekka Koponen took over his post during the recordings. In July 2000 more new material was added. The EP Blood Will Follow Blood was then released. After the delays, the second album was released in the same year under the name Where Angels Dwell No More . In April 2001 a music video for the song … kun veri peittää maan was created. After filming, the band took a break before writing new material. Meanwhile Koponen became a permanent member, but he switched from drums to keyboards, so that Ranta only had to take care of the vocals. Koponen quit again at the end of 2004 for personal reasons.

style

DanDevil from Metal.de wrote in his review of Horizon's Fall that you can hear melodic Black Metal with occasional female vocals. The album is straightforward, varied and catchy. The group also process melancholy tones in the less complex songs . Marcel Hübner from twilight-magazin.de heard in his review of Where Angels Dwell No More great parallels to Children of Bodom , but one is "always far more predictable and technically less sophisticated". Especially the electric guitars and the keyboard sound simple and unimaginative. Arlette Huguenin from the online magazine Vampster saw it similarly, and she felt reminded of Children of Bodom by the singing and melodies on the album, although the electric guitar and keyboard passages could not match those of Children of Bodom. On the album there are "no solo tinkering and speed races", but "a load of poppy melodies with black metal vocals". In general, the band focuses more on melodies than on complex song structures. Occasionally, groovy passages in the style of younger Sentenced are used (e.g. from the album Down ).
