The Dolderbahn is a private railway in the city of Zurich . The cog railway connects the Dolder area in the Hottingen district from the Römerhof stop on Römerhofplatz at 444 meters above sea level and ends at the Dolder station on the Adlisberg at 606 meters above sea level.
In addition to the connection with the residential area, the runway also serves as a feeder for two hotels, the Dolder wave pool, the Dolder open ice rink and the Adlisberg, which serves as a recreational area.
history
The operating company was founded in 1893. In 1895 it started operating as a funicular . It led over a distance of around 800 meters from Römerhofplatz to the Hotel Waldhaus Dolder at 548 meters above sea level.
A meter-gauge tram was put into operation on July 5, 1899 to connect with the Grand Hotel Dolder . It was operated with a single car of the same design as the StStZ car 57-84. The route had no direct connection to the Zurich tram network ; However, the StStZ took care of the maintenance of the motor vehicle and provided a replacement vehicle during a long overhaul. On December 31, 1930 the Dolder tram was discontinued and a bus took over the connection between the Waldhaus and the Grand Hotel.
From August 27, 1972 to September 29, 1973, the funicular was replaced by a rack railway and extended up to the Grand Hotel Dolder. Since then, it has been 1328 meters and overcomes a height difference of 162 meters with a slope of a maximum of 19.6 percent.
Today the Dolderbahn-Betriebs-AG , in which the City of Zurich holds a 50 percent stake, is the concession holder. The City of Zurich with its administrative department Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) has been entrusted with operational management since 1999 .
In 2004 the vehicles, the route and the stations of the Dolderbahn were completely overhauled. The company was therefore shut down for more than three months. As part of the renovation of the Grand Hotel Dolder between 2004 and 2008, the mountain station, which is now part of the hotel complex, was also renewed.
Rolling stock
Two Bhe 1/2 rack-and-pinion railcars from 1973 with a capacity of around one hundred passengers per car are used.
