Driving simulator for inland waters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A driving simulator for inland waterways is a complex computer-aided technology method for research in the field of applied technology and for training inland waterway operators .

By simulating real ship types and nautical environments, even rare and dangerous situations can be practiced cost-effectively.

In Germany there are currently two modern inland waterway simulators; another is in Rotterdam.

In September 2006, the modernized radar simulator was put into operation at the water police school in Hamburg. Since then, all skippers of the water police in Germany and France have been trained here. The system consists of three control stands where the trainees operate realistically on real radar devices and control panels with original instruments and control levers. Driving at night or in poor weather on sea or inland waterways can be practiced under any given conditions. The system has been formally approved for training for inland areas by the Water and Shipping Administration Department for Transport Technology (FVT) ; Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has certified the radar simulator for the sea area . At present (2010) this system is the only simulator in Europe that is approved for radar training and testing in inland areas.

The second inland navigation simulator has been in Duisburg since September 9, 2008. The innovative shallow water navigation simulator "SANDRA" ( acronym for Simulator for Advanced Navigation Duisburg Research and Application) was developed by the Development Center for Ship Technology and Transport Systems in Duisburg (DST). The software can simulate the driving dynamics of the virtual training ships almost realistically because, during development, high-capacity computer clusters in the DST calculated the behavior of the different types of ships and fed them into models . It is interesting for research to use it to test the driving style with which specific ships consume the least fuel or how new port facilities can be planned in such a way that they allow ships to enter optimally.

Application in the Duisburg Schiffer Vocational College

The center of the application is a fully equipped navigating bridge . With a viewing angle range of a maximum of 210 degrees, the all-round field of vision of the driver's cab of a barge is reproduced. The prospective helmsmen in inland shipping orientate themselves less by mileage than by visual markers such as churches, bridges and other distinctive landmarks. Seven projectors enable a detailed representation of the real landscape conditions and buildings, e.g. B. at port entrances. Behind this is the capacity of 33 computers in the Duisburg system.

Inland navigation operators are trained using five control stands, which can be used individually or interactively. The teachers at the Schiffer-Berufskolleg RHEIN can rehearse tricky driving situations, including heavy oncoming traffic, weather influences, difficult currents and technical instrument or oar failures. It is also possible to simulate journeys with passenger ships, in push convoy or with coupling convoys up to 185 meters long.

In addition to driving on sight under daylight conditions, night and radar drives can also be simulated. SANDRA enables targeted practical training in signal and light guidance as well as exercises in radio communication.
