Schiffer Vocational College RHEIN
The Schiffer Vocational College RHEIN in Duisburg is a vocational school of the upper secondary level . It offers nationwide vocational training for German inland shipping .
The school goes back to a Schiffer vocational school, which was opened on January 18, 1892 in Ruhrort on the initiative of the "Central Commission for Rhine Shipping". At that time more than 40% of the Prussian Rhine boatmen were resident within a radius of 10 km around the mouth of the Ruhr near Duisburg.
At the Schiffer-Berufskolleg training courses for inland waterway skippers , boat builders , shipbuilders and specialists in port logistics are offered. The Duisburg facility takes part in the “Independent School” trial. A special feature is the only driving simulator for inland waters in all of Europe according to the Deutschlandradio Kultur 2008 , which is used for inland navigation in the third year of training. In cooperation with the Walther-Rathenau-Berufskolleg in Duisburg-Hamborn there is also the possibility of training as a state-certified business economist specializing in logistics.
During the three-month vocational school per year of training in the training occupation "inland skipper" , the ship's boys and girls who have traveled from the Federal Republic of Germany and neighboring European countries are called the trainees in inland shipping on the "training ship RHEIN" in the city port of Duisburg-Homberg looked after around the clock. The "school ship RHEIN" is a training and further education facility of the employers' association of German inland shipping

On July 7, 2008 a report shot by a WDR television team was broadcast on WDR3 . The documentation showed, among other things, the dangers involved in loading and unloading a tanker as well as the flash of a grease fire in the galley and the appropriate fire fighting.
