Specialist for port logistics is the name of a state-recognized training occupation in Germany . Training is regulated in the Ordinance on Vocational Training for Port Logistics Specialists from January 20, 2006, which came into force on August 1, 2006 . The specialist for port logistics replaces the sea ​​cargo controller, whose training was regulated in the ordinance on professional training for sea cargo controllers of February 4, 1975.

The training usually lasts three years and is carried out in the dual vocational training system.

The introduction of a new apprenticeship was necessary above all in order to react to changed conditions in the area of ​​goods handling, storage and cargo and goods control.

Specialists in port logistics are trained and deployed primarily in port management companies that handle or store goods or in the goods control of sea port companies. The place of work is primarily in the port at transshipment points or on ships, but also in the respective department in the office.

The training can be completed in sea or inland ports .

Duties of the specialist for port logistics

In addition to general areas such as labor and collective bargaining law, safety and health protection at work and work organization, port logistics specialists are trained in at least the following areas:

  • Goods control and value-preserving measures
  • Storage and processing of goods

  • check incoming and outgoing goods for quantity, quality and whether they correspond to the condition specified in the cargo documents
  • clarify defects with the unloader or the person responsible for the load and eliminate or change them
  • determine the dimensions and weights of the load or calculate and check them
  • draw samples or create different patterns such as the sales or arbitrage pattern
  • are responsible for the storage and retrieval of goods and their proper storage
  • prepare and monitor the shipment of special and dangerous goods
  • monitor the loading and unloading of containers and ships
  • check the ship's rooms and loading facilities for the required cleanliness
