Gerardo Guevara
Luis Gerardo Guevara Viteri (born September 23, 1930 in Quito ) is an Ecuadorian composer .
Life
Guevara studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Quito and won first prize for the piano piece Inspiración in a composition competition marking its 50th anniversary in 1950 . He then went to Guayaquil , where he played as a pianist in the Orquesta Blacio Jr. and was assistant to the choirmaster of the Conservatorio Antonio Neumane . In 1958 he wrote his ballet Yaguar shungo for symphony orchestra, choir and soloists.
A UNESCO scholarship enabled him to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 1967 he became orchestra director at the École Normale de Musique . At the Sorbonne he studied with Jacques Chilly and received a diploma as a musicologist in 1968.
Since 1971 he has conducted the Ecuadorian Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional , in the following year he founded the choir of the Universidad Central del Ecuador , whose conductor he became. In 1973 he became president of the newly founded Sociedad de Autores y Compositores Ecuatorianos (SAYCE) . In 1980 he was appointed director of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música ; he held the position until 1988. Since 1993 he has worked at the Centro Integral de Música .
