Fallowfield Stadium was an athletics and football stadium in Fallowfield , Manchester . It was built in 1892 as the home of the Manchester Athletics Club. The English football club Manchester Wheelers also played on the stadium lawn.
The stadium became famous in 1893 when it hosted the FA Cup final . The final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton FC ended 1-0 for the Wanderers. There were 45,000 spectators at the game, although the stadium was only designed for 15,000 spectators.
A cycle track was also built from ashes in the stadium and was used for the national cycling championships in 1919 and the British Empire Games cycling competitions in 1934 . After 1955, the stadium was named Reg Harris Stadium in honor of the well-known British cyclist , who had acquired the track in 1950 after retiring from active cycling and had the surface replaced with pink cement. In 1976 the track was renovated again and the surface renewed.
In 1897 and 1907, the National Athletics Championships were also held at Fallowfield Stadium.
Rugby union was also played in the stadium. The very last international match between England and Scotland outside London was played here in 1897.
In 1960 the stadium was bought by Manchester University. It was demolished in 1994 and is now the Richmond Park Halls of Residence.
