Fall protection sand

Fall protection sand under swings

As a fall protection sand is of a special variant sand Denoted due to a grain size mm in particular for the movement of 0.2-2 under swings or other games and sports equipment suitable in which a risk of fall is.

If the grain is larger (2–16 mm), the material is called fall protection gravel and is also suitable for medium heights of up to 3 m.

Fall protection sand and gravel are first extracted from sediments like normal sand and selected according to the desired grain size.

properties

Fall protection gravel in mixed grain size 2–8 mm on a climbing wall

Fall protection sand and gravel have little adhesion due to their relatively large grain size of 0.2–2 mm and> 2 mm . However, the property of the large grain size is reflected in the high fall absorption. This is where fall protection sand differs from play sand , which, due to its grain size of 0–1 (max. 2) mm, has a high level of adhesion when wet, which can be used to create shapes, but which offers little or no fall absorption. While moist sand freezes in frost and hardly dampens, the properties of coarser gravel are retained.

application

Playground floors

Fall protection is prescribed according to the DIN EN 1176 standard (playground equipment and playground floors), depending on the floor material and the maximum height of fall. Concrete and asphalt allow a maximum fall height of 60 cm. Up to 100 cm stone-free topsoil and up to 150 cm maintained lawn can be used. Fall protection sand or gravel is used for greater fall heights, which absorb a fall from a maximum of 2 or 3 m in a layer thickness of 200 or 300 mm. Also, wood chips and bark mulch are admitted with the same parameters, but are subject to faster weathering.

Sports climbing facilities

Fall protection gravel on a climbing wall

Fall protection gravel is used for shock absorption outdoors on systems for sport climbing. The standard DIN EN 12572-2 stipulates a grain diameter of 8 to 16 mm and a layer thickness of 400 mm for artificial bouldering walls ; from a wall height of 3 m, an indication of additional safety techniques ( spotting , boulder mats ) is required.
