The Falster-Astarte ( Astarte falsteri ) is a mussel - kind from the family of the Astarten (Astartidae). The taxonomic status as an independent species is doubted by some authors. It is endemic to the coastal waters of the western Baltic Sea .

features

The same-hinged case of the holotype measures 23 mm in length, 19.1 mm in height and 9.3 mm in cross-section. It is rounded triangular in outline or cross-ovoid. It is clearly unequal, and the vertebrae are in front of the midline. The anterior dorsal margin is slightly concave and slopes steeply. The posterior dorsal margin is slightly convex and slopes significantly less. The front end is more rounded than the rear end. The ventral margin is well arched. The ligament is external. The lunula is only indistinct. The area , on the other hand, is clearly limited, but relatively narrow-lanceolate. The lock of the right valve has three main or cardinal teeth, a bulky main tooth, which is surrounded by deep pits, and a thin main tooth each in front and behind. There is also an anterior posterior tooth and an indistinct posterior posterior tooth. In the left, a deep pit is delimited in front and behind by two smaller main teeth. Both teeth are notched at the top. There is also an indistinct anterior posterior tooth and a clear posterior posterior tooth.

The two sphincter impressions are almost the same size, but comparatively small. The anterior sphincter impression is kidney-shaped, the foot muscle is clearly separated from it. The posterior sphincter impression is rounded and square. The foot muscle connects directly to the sphincter muscle and forms a kind of grip. The surface line is not indented.

The ornamentation consists of fine ribs parallel to the edge. The thick periostracum is dark brown, does not flake and has an oily sheen. The inside is white and the inside edge of the case is smooth.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Falster-Astarte has a very limited distribution area in the Baltic Sea , between the Danish islands of Falster and Bornholm . It also occurs in the German part of the Baltic Sea.

It lives there, buried shallowly in muddy bottoms or muddy sandy bottoms at a depth of 20 to 70 meters.

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 2001 by Godtfred Høpner Petersen . The MolluscaBase treats the taxon as a valid species, as does the “Compendium of Bivalves”. The “HELCOM Checklist for Baltic Sea Invertebrate Species”, on the other hand, puts it in the synonymy of Astarte borealis .
